Cubs was founded in 1916, originally called Wolf Cubs, by Lord Baden-Powell. He had already founded Scouts and realised there was a need for a provision for younger boys. Wolf Cubs was formed in 1916, in 1966 the decision was made to change the name from Wolf Cubs to Cub Scouts. Then in 1991, the Scout Association stated that girls could join for the first time. Not all groups immediately took this up, so in 2007 the Scout Association said that all groups had to accept girls. In 2016, Cubs celebrated 100 years, with special celebrations taking place around the country.
If you have ever seen a Scout you may have noticed that we salute and make the Scout sign, with our right hand and shake with our left hand.
Scouts shaking with their left hands goes back to when Lord Baden-Powell was a soldier in Africa. Warriors would hold their spears in their right hand and their shields in their left hand. It was a sign of great trust and respect to drop your shield, leaving yourself at risk of harm, to shake with your left hand.
The Scout sign, (opposite) using your right hand, is made when making or renewing your promise.
The Scout salute is when you raise your right hand to your head. This is used during Grand Howl or when receiving a badge.
